Dolly watched patiently as we assembled a kitchen cart in
eleven steps, many of which required double, triple, quadruple checking instructions
with vague pictures and words.
Only because each piece included a clearly
marked letter did the cart come together so smoothly, replacing a very outdated
telephone stand below an empty phone jack.
Dolly sat silently or lay her head
on my thigh, with eyes focused on moving fingers and hands building the cart
step by step.
Perhaps she will rebuild it, if it breaks.
